Malapascua
A hidden gem of the Philippines
Malapascua is a small island located approximately 7 kilometers off the northeastern tip of Cebu Island in the Visayan Sea. Despite its compact size - just 2.5 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide - this tropical paradise is a favorite destination for divers. Featured as one of the 100 dive sites in National Geographic's "100 Dives of a Lifetime", Malapascua offers several incredible dive spots, including Monad Shoal and Kimud Shoal. Monad Shoal is renowned as one of the few locations where divers can swim with thresher sharks. However, recent shifts in the marine ecosystem have led to an increase in tiger shark sightings at Monad Shoal, resulting in a decline in thresher shark encounters, as many of these sharks have begun to move to Kimud Shoal.
The island is also a snorkeling paradise, featuring a rich variety of coral reefs and colorful fish. Be sure to visit Dakit-Dakit Marine Protected Area during your stay, as this stunning snorkeling spot provides a unique chance to see school of juvenile blacktip sharks swimming gracefully in their natural environment.
Beyond its underwater wonders, Malapascua offers a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can unwind on the beach, enjoy local cuisine, and immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of the local communities. With its peaceful beauty and welcoming locals, Malapascua is an ideal getaway for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.
You can't truly appreciate the unique charm of Malapascua unless you experience it for yourself. Here’s some information we hope will be helpful for your upcoming visit.
